Hinds CC Raymond Campus Preview Day draws crowd

RAYMOND – Terry High School seniors Boyd Chase and Emerril Green hope to make it all add up as they transition soon into college from high school.

“My parents want me to go to either here or Mississippi State first,” Chase said, speaking to instructors in the mathematics department at Hinds Community College Raymond Campus on Feb. 2 for Preview Day. “I’m looking at studying biomedical engineering.”

Chase and Green, who’s looking into Hinds’ multiple computer-related technology programs, were among more than 800 high school seniors and their parents who attended the event at the Mayo Gym. The annual exhibition features all the college’s academic and career-tech programs, activities and organizations Hinds has to offer.

Prospective students from high schools in and around Jackson and from Vicksburg toured the campus and interacted with students and faculty about admissions, scholarships, financial aid, majors, housing, student life and more.

For high schoolers, it’s a time to find out how Hinds’ programs of study can build a successful career.

“I found out about all the different projects and blueprints they can do in the Fab Lab,” said Del Money, a senior at Jim Hill High School who checked out the latest prototypes coming off the 3-D printers used in the college’s Engineering and Drafting Design program. “I want to try to be an architect.”

Career success in healthcare figures to run in several families present for the event.

“It’ll be nursing, since I like helping people,” said Tyra Wilson, a Warren Central High School senior who attended Preview Day with her mother, Katie Guise, and sister, Jada Guise, also a Warren Central senior.

Hinds CC Preview Day offers high school students glimpse into college life

Hinds Community College kicks off a series of individual campus recruiting events with Preview Day to be held on the Raymond Campus beginning at 8:30 a.m. on Feb. 2.

Preview Day, at the Mayo Fieldhouse, is a way for high school seniors who are considering Hinds in fall 2018 to learn everything they need to know about the college.

“Preview Day is a great recruiting event to attend since so many of our faculty are there,” said Kathryn Cole, director of Enrollment Services. “Guests can meet instructors in more than 50 booths to talk about classes, programs of study, academic transfer majors and career/technical programs.”

The expo style event is come-and-go until noon. At Preview Day, high school seniors will get to meet faculty, staff and students, tour campus and learn about admissions, majors, housing, student life and more.  Participants can also enjoy food and prizes.

They will also learn about financial aid and scholarships, including the Hinds Community College Foundation scholarships, which have a Feb. 15 application deadline. For information see the scholarship tab under Admissions at www.hindscc.edu.

RAYMOND – Aqueasha Rimmer has more than one career option in mind, and Hinds faculty from multiple programs helped her line up several choices.

“I just need to get my tests score up and I can start here in the fall,” Rimmer said. “I’m looking at things like dental assisting and digital imaging, just seeing what kinds of jobs I can get.”

Rimmer, a senior at Callaway High School in Jackson, was among nearly 700 high school seniors and their parents who attended Preview Day on Feb. 3 at Mayo Gym on the Raymond Campus, which featured exhibits for all academic and career-tech programs, activities and organizations Hinds has to offer. Prospective students from high schools in from all over the state toured the campus and interacted with students and faculty about admissions, scholarships, majors, housing, student life and more.

“It’s easy for me to work with numbers, as opposed to with words,” said Parker Goff, a Ridgeland High School senior, who met with Electrical Technology program instructors with his mother, Sandra, herself a Hinds alum. “I’m strongest in math and science.”

Singing is not just a talent but a unique form of self-expression for Alicia Foster, a senior at Warren Central High School.

“It’s an escape and an outlet for me,” said Foster, who along with her parents, Dr. Johnnie and Andrea Foster, of Vicksburg, found out about the college’s varied music and voice programs from Hinds’ Music and Choir instructors.

“I like the vibe here,” Andrea Foster said. “It’s not too big, and it’s close knit. It will be a good fit to get her feet wet in college.”
