Golf tournament benefits Warren-Claiborne students

VICKSBURG – Since the early 1990s, the  annual Clyde Donnell Golf Tournament  at Clear Creek Golf Club in Bovina has benefited a scholarship fund for Hinds Community College students provided through the Warren-Claiborne County Alumni Chapter, raising approximately $150,000 in that span of time.

This year’s tournament is Sept. 18 at Clear Creek Golf Club with registration at 12:30 p.m. and play to begin at 1 p.m. For information, contact Libby Posey, Hinds Community College alumni coordinator, at 601.857.3350.

The tournament started small and was simply called the Warren County Chapter golf tournament for several years. The scholarship from the proceeds of the golf tournament was begun in 1999 and endowed in 2003.

In October 2005, one of the biggest supporters of the tournament, Clyde Donnell of Vicksburg, passed away. The golf committee decided to rename the tournament after him.

Donnell had been a member of the Hinds Community College Board of Trustees and a member of the Hinds Community College Foundation Board as well as serving on the Warren County Board of Supervisors and the board of Merchants Bank.

Donnell was born in D’Lo but lived in Vicksburg for 40 years. He was a retired U.S. Navy veteran who had served during World War II aboard the USS Ranger and the USS Lexington.
